Activities at Firle: Clay Pigeon Shooting
Set against the sweeping beauty of the Sussex Downs at sat at the heart of the 7000-acre Firle Estate, Firle Place offers exceptional opportunities for a wide range of fun activities. One of the most popular is clay pigeon shooting which provides novices and experienced shooters alike with an unforgettable experience amidst the beautiful Sussex countryside.
Simulated clay pigeon shooting here on the Firle Estate captures all the tradition and excitement of a classic game shoot without the use of live quarry. Unlike a static shoot, a day at Firle is dynamic and immersive. Participants move across a variety of carefully selected locations throughout the estate, each chosen to replicate the changing landscapes and challenges of traditional field shooting. From open downland to wooded areas, every “drive” presents a new test of skill, focus, and adaptability. This variety not only keeps the experience exciting but also encourages participants to develop their technique with the support of Will Fenner and his expert team.
Will brings a wealth of knowledge and credibility, combining his winter role as a professional gamekeeper with an impressive international career in competitive clay shooting.
Having represented Great Britain eight times and earned titles as a Junior World and European Champion as well as an overall British Champion, his guidance ensures that every participant benefits from world-class instruction delivered in an approachable and encouraging manner.
A typical day begins at 8am with a hearty breakfast at The Ram Inn, Firle village’s charming village pub, that sets the tone for the day ahead. Following breakfast, guests head out for the first two drives, where the thrill of simulated shooting quickly takes hold. Mid-morning “elevenses” are served in the field, offering a welcome pause to relax, socialise, and reflect on the morning’s progress. The day continues with two further drives before returning to The Ram for a well-earned lunch.
Beyond the enjoyment of the activity itself, clay pigeon shooting offers the opportunity for personal and team development. It sharpens concentration, builds hand-eye coordination, and fosters a sense of discipline and composure under pressure. For groups, it provides an excellent platform for team building, encouraging communication, camaraderie, and shared achievement in a relaxed yet structured setting. Whether entertaining clients, rewarding colleagues, or simply gathering friends, the experience naturally brings people together.
Available for groups as a standalone experience or as part of an event program for private hire events, packages run several times a week from April through to October, subject to weather conditions. Each day is carefully managed to blend of sport with warm hospitality and the chance to enjoy the spectacular Sussex countryside.
