New Firle WoodBurner

Firle Place commissioned Baystar to install a 400kW biomass district heating system. The biomass system is designed to provide heat to the main house and tea room as well as other properties on the estate next to the The Georgian Riding School (which is a Grade 2* listed building used to host weddings). The site will be served by 630m of district heat main, replacing the old oil boilers, to provide a considerable carbon saving and bringing the Firle Place woodlands back into management.

A couple of key factors had to be taken into consideration by Baystar when designing and carrying out the project, firstly Firle Place is home to many antiques and art which require a specialist sensitive humidity controls to be set up. Secondly the excavation work has been particularly challenging given the whole site is of archaeological interest.

From a site layout perspective, Baystar have ensured that the purpose built barn style building has been designed to be in keeping with the rural nature of the setting so as to not detract form the beauty of the surroundings. The barn will house the boiler next to the existing farm yard, a 8,000 litre buffer tank and woodchip fuel store.

Through collaboration between Baystar, Ben Hardy Construction and other excellent staff on site at Firle Place, the project has managed to deliver numerous benefits. The system will generate an income for the property, it has resulted in the reinstating of the forestry business at Firle in order for the system to use its own wood fuel and finally it has reduced the carbon footprint of the Estate as a whole.
